What are they and what are the differences?

One of the fun things about creating tags and signage, is that you can use different types of material while still following ADA Guidelines. One thing that we personally love working with, is etched and engraved tags. So, we will be talking about the differences between the two and what are the advantages.

What is Etching?

From Wikipedia, Etching is traditionally the process of using strong acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio in the metal. But etching isn’t just for tags and signs, it’s also a more traditional style of printmaking, etching drawings into copper plates or stone (and is sometimes still done today, although it is awfully expensive). The process of etching when it comes to manufacturing signage can involve more intricate details and designs. The lines produced are usually crisp and clean.

What are Engravings?

Engraving is the process or art of cutting or carving a design on a hard surface, especially to make a print.  From engravers.com, “laser engraving cuts a cavity through the material’s surface, leaving a cavity that reveals an image or writing at eye level that is noticeable to the touch as well.” While the two do seem similar, engraving is different. Some engraving work can be done with laser engraving machines, producing beautiful designs. It can also be automated by a computer, while etching cannot. The only drawback when using this particular machine is that you can only use certain materials.

What are the advantages of the two?

Glad you asked! Both come with many advantages including a beautiful and unique appearance compared to screen or vinyl cut tags and signs. It’s also very cost-effective in terms of how much material is used. Engraved signs cause less wear and tear as time goes on. . Its paint won’t wash off, get chipped or fade away and its materials won’t rust. It’s also a very quick process, as the material is vaporized with each pulse.

With etching, the laser is extremely precise, and the materials are relatively cheaper. It also provides durability and ultimate repeatability.
