What is UV Printing?
The distinguishing characteristics of UV direct printing are the special UV inks and the UV ink-curing light source. The chemical reaction caused by the intense UV light is what distinguishes this inkjet process from others. The print-head has a UV light source on either end. The light source follows the ink as it is sprayed from the jet, instantly curing the ink and causing it to adhere to the substrate. [Photo Works Group]
This process is also called UV flatbed printing or direct-to-substrate printing. This is because the final print will go directly into the substrate.
What Tools Do You Need?
Direct-to-substrate UV inkjet printer
o You need to get a printer specifically for UV printing, obviously. There are many manufacturers out there to choose from. But, you should always do some research in terms of quality and price as that can greatly affect the signage you create. You also want a good printer that will create these designs in a quick amount of time while still upholding amazing quality.
- Ink
o Yes, the obvious, ink. Why buy a printer and not ink? The reason we bring this up is that you need to be careful with the type of ink you choose. Most printers have their own inks specific to that model, and buying the wrong one could potentially damage your machine. You should also keep in mind the capacity at which the printer you purchased can do. Some UV printers are unable to print in white – which can be difficult if that’s what a client ordered.
- Material
o One of the major benefits of UV direct printing is that nearly any material can be used to produce signage.
- Acrylic
- laminate
- aluminum
- PVC
However, sign shops also need to factor in the cost of such materials if they opt to advertise their new printing option.
