Things To Check For With ADA Signs

We have gone over the basics of ADA signs and their guidelines in past blog posts, but one frequent question that gets brought up is ‘Are my Signs ADA compliant?’ In this blog, we will be highlighting some key factors when assembling, installing, and designing your wayfinding or braille signage. Please note that all buildings that provide a public service must have ADA signs required by law. Your business can be fined tens of thousands of dollars and be subject to lawsuits if found in violation

Almost all states follow the federal laws for ADA Guidelines, except California. We Will also be highlighting what their requirements are as well.

Height:

When installing ADA signs in your hospital, or public library, you must keep in mind the height at which they should be placed. Wall-mounted signs should be installed 48 inches minimum above the floor or ground surface. They also need to be measured from the baseline of the lowest tactile character and 60 inches maximum above the floor or ground surface. And measured from the baseline to the highest tactile character.

Location:

Signs should be mounted to the wall on the latch side of the door. If there is no room on that wall, the sign may be mounted on the nearest adjacent wall. Single door: sign shall be mounted next to the door on the latch side. Outward swinging doors: In the case of outward swinging doors, the sign must be mounted to the wall outside of the arc of the door swing. The sign should be located within an 18” x 18” square of clear floor space (18” away from the door and 18” away from the wall).

Question: Do I need ADA compliant signs in the stairwells of my building?

Yes, you do. By law, you are required to have a tactile sign next to each door inside a stairwell. These signs should identify the floor level, stair level, and exit level.

Reminder: The Department of Justice has responsibility for enforcing ADA laws the actual assessment of signs, however, is usually handled by local code inspectors. Citations from the Department of Justice can range as high as $50,000 for the first offense.

California Guidelines:

From Erie Custom Signs: “The state of California, for example, has stricter, more distinct rules for ADA signage than the rest of the United States. This means that California-based facilities (and the sign shops they turn to for ADA-compliant displays) must be outfitted with signage specific to that state.”

Key Guidelines to be aware of:

ADA Restroom Signs: The California-mandated signs feature two geometric tactile symbols without braille, text, or pictograms. This is because California residents have learned to understand what sign it is by touch.

Title 24: all doors leading to a public restroom must be clearly identified by a geometric symbol.
